ANN ARBOR, MI – July 12, 2023 – Livability.com has named Ann Arbor and Troy among the top 100 best small- to medium-sized cities to live in across the United States. The prestigious ranking evaluated more than 2,000 cities with populations between 20,000 and 300,000, analyzing factors including affordability, healthcare, education, and quality of life.

The recognition comes as Michigan cities continue to gain national attention for their livability factors despite economic challenges facing the state. Ann Arbor ranked particularly high for its educational opportunities, vibrant downtown, and cultural amenities, while Troy scored exceptionally well for safety, economic opportunity, and family-friendly environment.

“This recognition validates what residents have long known about Ann Arbor – it’s not just a great college town, but a thriving community with exceptional quality of life for people at all stages,” said Middy Matthews, CEO of The Arbor Move Team. “The combination of educational excellence, cultural richness, and economic opportunity creates a uniquely appealing environment for homebuyers.”

The Livability study examined over 50 data points grouped into nine categories: amenities, economy, demographics, housing, social and civic capital, education, health, transportation and infrastructure, and remote readiness. Both Michigan cities demonstrated remarkable balance across these categories, with particular strength in education, healthcare access, and community engagement.

Ann Arbor’s ranking highlighted its world-class university, thriving tech sector, and vibrant arts scene. The city’s walkable downtown, extensive parks system, and diverse dining options were also noted as significant factors. Meanwhile, Troy received recognition for its excellent public schools, robust job market, and strategic location within the metro Detroit region.

Real estate market data suggests these rankings reflect tangible advantages for homeowners in these communities. Properties in both Ann Arbor and Troy have demonstrated stronger value retention and appreciation compared to many similar-sized cities nationwide, even during market fluctuations.

“What’s particularly notable about both Ann Arbor and Troy is how they’ve managed to maintain their distinct community character while embracing growth and innovation,” Matthews observed. “For homebuyers, this translates to neighborhoods that offer both stability and dynamism – a rare combination in today’s market.”

The recognition comes at a time when many Americans are reconsidering their living situations, with increased remote work flexibility allowing for greater geographic choice. Smaller cities offering high quality of life, like Ann Arbor and Troy, have seen increased interest from buyers previously limited to larger metropolitan areas.

Local real estate professionals report this national recognition reinforces what they’re seeing in buyer behavior. “We’re increasingly working with clients relocating from across the country who have researched multiple options and specifically chosen Ann Arbor for its unique combination of amenities,” noted Matthews. “This ranking validates their research and decision-making process.”

The Livability study also highlighted both cities’ resilience during economic challenges, with diverse employment bases and strong civic institutions providing stability even during uncertain times. This economic foundation contributes significantly to real estate market strength in both communities.

For residents considering selling their homes, the recognition potentially adds marketing value. “When national publications recognize what makes our communities special, it helps attract qualified buyers who already appreciate the unique value proposition these cities offer,” Matthews explained.
